How to Select a Three-Phase Motor for a Centrifugal Pump

Selecting a three-phase motor for a centrifugal pump begins with the pump duty point: required flow, total head, liquid and operating hours. The motor should be chosen from the pump shaft-power requirement after accounting for transmission efficiency and a realistic service margin; it should not be selected only from a nominal kW label.

Information to confirm

  • Required flow rate and total dynamic head at the duty point
  • Pump shaft power or performance curve, plus coupling or belt-drive efficiency
  • Supply voltage, frequency and whether operation is 50 Hz, 60 Hz or inverter-driven
  • Required running speed and corresponding pole count
  • Installation arrangement, such as B3, B5 or B35, shaft and flange dimensions
  • Liquid temperature, ambient temperature, altitude and ingress-protection requirements

How to narrow the specification

Start from the actual duty point, not the equipment name alone. Check the driven load, transmission losses, operating environment and installation constraints together. Keep the nameplate requirements, mounting dimensions and local electrical supply in the enquiry so the recommended configuration can be checked before order.
