When Should You Choose C3 Bearing Clearance?

View HX bearings with the correct internal clearance specifications and request a quote

C3 is an internal clearance class, not a universal upgrade. It can help in hot-running or interference-fit assemblies, but too much clearance can increase noise and reduce running accuracy.

Send the duty point, model or drawing and installation conditions. We will confirm the practical variant before you place an order.

C3 indicates greater-than-normal internal radial clearance before installation. It is not automatically better. The needed clearance changes with interference fits, operating temperature, speed and the internal design of the machine.

Information to confirm

  • Bearing designation and existing clearance suffix
  • Shaft and housing fit tolerances
  • Expected operating temperature difference between rings
  • Speed, preload, vibration and alignment conditions
  • Lubricant type and potential for thermal growth
  • Whether the bearing is installed in a motor, pump, gearbox, conveyor or other equipment

How to narrow the specification

Start from the actual duty point, not the equipment name alone. Check the driven load, transmission losses, operating environment and installation constraints together. Keep the nameplate requirements, mounting dimensions and local electrical supply in the enquiry so the recommended configuration can be checked before order.

Request a technical quotation

Do not replace a normal-clearance bearing with C3 solely because the machine runs hot. Send the application data and existing code with your bearing enquiry so clearance can be reviewed against the fit and temperature conditions.

For a preliminary recommendation, submit the operating conditions and any drawing or nameplate photo. Final selection must be confirmed against the complete application.

Technical FAQ

Is C3 always better than normal clearance?

No. Choose C3 only when temperature, fit and operating conditions justify it. Use the manufacturer’s fit and clearance guidance.

Which applications often need C3?

Some motors, pumps and continuously hot-running machines use C3, but the final choice depends on shaft fit, housing fit and temperature rise.
