Vibrating Screen Troubleshooting: Uneven Motion, Low Amplitude and Excessive Vibration
Related equipment: Linear Vibrating Screen — compare deck configuration and screening duty before specifying a replacement.
Uneven motion, low amplitude or a sudden increase in vibration can reduce screening efficiency and damage the machine. Start by identifying what changed: feed rate, material moisture, support condition, drive setup or a recently replaced component. Use the equipment manual and measured operating data rather than adjusting eccentric weights by guesswork.
Before inspecting the machine
If vibration is abnormal, stop the screen when safe, isolate and lock out all energy sources, and verify zero energy before opening guards or touching the drive. Follow site procedures and the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Do not inspect moving parts while the screen is running.
Uneven or diagonal motion
Check whether all support points sit level and carry load evenly. Compare spring condition, free height, seating and signs of fatigue; inspect the screen frame for cracks, loose fasteners or distortion. Verify that the exciter, coupling and drive components are aligned and that matched eccentric weights are installed in the positions specified by the OEM. If multiple motors are used, confirm the prescribed rotation and synchronization method.
Torsional vibration
On a linear screen, twisting can result from unequal support stiffness, a frame out of square, different phase angles, a misaligned drive shaft or a non-level installation. Check the frame diagonals and mounting plane against the drawing, then inspect the coupling and spring supports. Do not correct phase or weight settings until the machine is isolated and the correct OEM procedure is available.
Low amplitude or poor separation
- Measure supply voltage and confirm the motor and exciter are operating within their nameplate limits.
- Compare feed rate, bed depth and moisture with the design duty; overloading can mask the screen openings and increase dynamic load.
- Inspect screen panels, tensioning and apertures for blinding, wear or loose attachment.
- Check spring condition and exciter lubrication or bearing condition according to the maintenance schedule.
- Confirm the installed eccentric setting against the approved drawing; changing it changes the generated force and must stay within the machine rating.
Excessive vibration or jumping
Inspect anchors, support steel, isolation springs and the foundation for looseness, damage or resonance. Check for uneven buildup of material and confirm the drive direction as specified. If vibration rose suddenly, noise or heat is present, or the structure is moving, keep the screen out of service until a qualified technician identifies the cause.
Log amplitude at the same measurement points and operating conditions after each approved repair. This makes trends comparable and helps separate a process change from a mechanical fault.
