Bearing Selection Guide: Choose the Right Type for Your Application
Compare HX bearing families — Start with the load and geometry, then confirm the exact series and dimensions against your drawing.
Choosing a bearing by bore diameter alone is a common way to miss the real requirement. A sound selection matches the bearing’s load capacity and speed capability to the machine, while accounting for life, alignment, lubrication, fits and the environment.
1. Define the application before choosing a type
Collect shaft and housing dimensions, radial and axial loads, load direction and variation, speed range, duty cycle, target service life, temperature, contamination or moisture exposure, available lubrication, space limits and mounting method. Note shock loads, starts and stops, vibration, shaft deflection and any misalignment. If data are unknown, identify assumptions and have them checked before final selection.
2. Match bearing type to the load
- Deep groove ball bearings: common choice for radial loads and moderate axial loads in compact, general-purpose applications. Review speed, clearance and sealing requirements.
- Cylindrical roller bearings: useful where radial load capacity and stiffness are priorities; axial-load capability depends on the design.
- Spherical roller bearings: designed for demanding radial loads and can accommodate limited misalignment in suitable arrangements. Check axial load and lubrication carefully.
- Tapered roller bearings: support combined radial and axial loads; arrangements, adjustment and preload need correct design.
These are screening guidelines, not substitutes for a maker’s catalogue or calculation.
3. Check speed, life and operating conditions
Compare required speed with the bearing’s limiting or reference speed for the selected cage, lubricant, load and cooling. Calculate basic rating life using the correct equivalent dynamic load and bearing rating, then apply appropriate reliability and application factors. Actual service life can be shortened by contamination, poor lubrication, installation errors, vibration and transient loads; a catalogue life calculation is not a warranty of field life.
For temperature, moisture, dust and corrosive exposure, evaluate lubricant stability, seals or shields, material and corrosion protection. Check whether thermal expansion changes internal clearance or fit. Do not assume one bearing clearance or grease grade suits every motor or machine.
4. Confirm fits, internal clearance and mounting
Select shaft and housing fits based on which ring rotates relative to the load, load magnitude, material and temperature. A fit that is too loose can allow creep; excessive interference can reduce internal clearance. Confirm tolerance classes, shoulder dimensions, fillet radii, retention and mounting tools on the equipment drawing. Where paired angular-contact or tapered bearings are used, follow the designed arrangement and preload setting.
5. Validate the final selection
Before ordering, verify the full designation, dimensions, load ratings, speed, clearance, cage, seals, lubrication, accuracy and applicable standard. For special duty, share operating data with the bearing supplier and request the selection basis.
Browse the HX range: deep groove ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, spherical roller bearings and tapered roller bearings. Provide shaft diameter, load direction and magnitude, speed, temperature, duty and equipment model so the correct series can be confirmed.
Final selection must be checked against the application calculation and exact manufacturer data for the proposed bearing.
